What Happens During Your Dental Exam?

A comprehensive dental exam at The Dental Difference includes far more than checking for cavities.

Dr. Mosmen evaluates your teeth for decay, cracks, wear, and structural damage. He examines your gums for signs of inflammation, recession, or disease. He assesses your bite alignment and checks for issues related to grinding or clenching. He inspects the soft tissues of your mouth, throat, and tongue for abnormalities. He reviews any existing dental work to ensure it’s holding up well.

Digital x-rays and cone beam CT imaging allow Dr. Mosmen to see beneath the surface, revealing cavities between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, infections at tooth roots, impacted teeth, and other issues that aren’t visible during a visual exam.

This thorough approach ensures that problems are caught early, when they’re small and manageable.

Professional Cleanings Go Deeper

Even with excellent brushing and flossing at home, plaque and tartar build up in areas that are difficult or impossible to reach on your own. Professional cleanings remove this buildup before it causes cavities or gum disease.

Our hygienists use specialized instruments to clean above and below the gum line, removing hardened tartar that can’t be brushed away. They polish your teeth to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel, making it harder for plaque to accumulate. They floss between every tooth to ensure nothing is left behind.

At-home care is essential, but it can’t replace professional cleanings. The two work together to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Controlling Plaque, Tartar, & Bacteria

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on your teeth. When it’s not removed through brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar within 24 to 48 hours. Once tartar forms, it can only be removed with professional instruments.

Tartar provides a rough surface where more plaque and bacteria accumulate, accelerating decay and gum disease. Regular professional cleanings disrupt this cycle, removing tartar before it causes damage and resetting your mouth to a healthier baseline.

Controlling bacteria through consistent home care and professional cleanings is the most effective way to prevent cavities and gum disease.

Early Detection Prevents Bigger Problems

One of the most valuable aspects of regular exams is early detection. Small cavities caught during routine exams can be treated with simple fillings. The same cavities left untreated may eventually require crowns or root canals.

Gum disease detected in its earliest stage can often be reversed with improved hygiene and professional cleanings. Once it advances to periodontitis, treatment becomes more complex, and some damage may be permanent.

Cracks, worn enamel, failed restorations, and bite problems are all easier to address when caught early. Dr. Mosmen’s thorough exams ensure that nothing is missed.

Evaluating Gum Health At Every Visit

Healthy gums are just as important as healthy teeth. During your exam, we measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth to assess gum attachment and bone levels. We check for bleeding, inflammation, and recession that indicate gum disease.

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, but it’s also one of the most preventable dental problems. Regular gum health assessments allow us to catch it early and keep it under control.

For patients with a history of gum disease, more frequent cleanings and closer monitoring help prevent recurrence and protect long-term oral health.

How Often Should You Come In?

The standard recommendation is exams and cleanins every six months. This schedule works well for most patients and allows us to maintain your oral health with minimal intervention.

However, not everyone has the same needs. Patients with gum disease, frequent cavities, dry mouth, diabetes, or other risk factors often benefit from more frequent visits, typically every three to four months.

Dr. Mosmen will recommend a schedule tailored to your individual needs. Our goal is to keep your smile healthy with the least intervention necessary.

Personalized Preventive Care Plans

No two patients have identical oral health needs. Dr. Mosmen evaluates your individual risk factors, goals, and oral health history to create a personalized preventive care plan.

Your plan may include more frequent cleanings if you have gum disease, fluoride treatments if you’re prone to cavities, sealants to protect vulnerable teeth, specific home care recommendations based on your needs, or dietary and lifestyle guidance to support oral health.

Dr. Mosmen is committed to educating his patients on all aspects of achieving good oral health. His bedside manner is friendly, patient, and caring, and he takes the time to ensure you understand your oral health and the steps you can take to protect it.
