Dental X-RaysBrick, NJ

Dental x-rays are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in modern dentistry. At The Dental Difference in Brick, NJ, Dr. Mosmen uses advanced digital x-ray technology and cone beam CT imaging to see beneath the surface of your teeth and gums, catching problems early and planning treatment with precision.

Many dental problems develop where they can’t be seen during a visual exam. X-rays reveal what’s hidden, allowing us to diagnose and treat issues before they cause pain or serious damage.

Why Dental X-Rays Are Essential

A visual exam only shows what’s happening on the surface. X-rays allow Dr. Mosmen to see between teeth, beneath the gum line, inside the tooth structure, and within the bone.

Dental x-rays detect:

  • Cavities between teeth that aren’t visible during an exam
  • Decay beneath existing fillings or crowns
  • Bone loss from gum disease
  • Infections at tooth roots
  • Abscesses or cysts
  • Impacted teeth
  • Jaw abnormalities or fractures
  • Tooth development issues in children

Without x-rays, these problems often go undetected until they become symptomatic. By that point, treatment is more complex and more expensive. X-rays allow us to intervene early, when treatment is simpler and more conservative.

Types Of Dental X-Rays We Use

Different types of x-rays serve different diagnostic purposes. Dr. Mosmen selects the appropriate imaging based on your individual needs.

  • Bitewing x-rays show the upper and lower back teeth in a single view and are used to detect cavities between teeth and monitor bone levels. They’re typically taken during routine check-ups.
  • Periapical x-rays capture the entire tooth from crown to root tip and are used to evaluate root health, detect infections or abscesses, and assess the bone surrounding the tooth.
  • Panoramic x-rays capture a wide view of the entire mouth, including all teeth, both jaws, sinuses, and surrounding structures. They’re useful for evaluating impacted teeth, planning implants or extractions, and assessing overall jaw health.
  • Cone beam CT provides detailed three-dimensional imaging of teeth, bone, nerves, and soft tissues. This advanced technology is invaluable for implant planning, diagnosing complex issues, and evaluating jaw and airway anatomy.

Radiation Safety & Digital Technology

Patient safety is a priority at The Dental Difference. We use digital x-ray technology, which emits up to 90% less radiation than traditional film x-rays while providing sharper, higher-quality images.

Digital x-rays are faster, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly. The images are available instantly and can be enhanced, enlarged, or shared electronically with specialists when needed.

Dr. Mosmen follows strict protocols to minimize radiation exposure, including using protective lead aprons and thyroid collars, taking only the x-rays that are clinically necessary, and using the lowest effective radiation dose.

The amount of radiation from a full set of dental x-rays is comparable to the radiation you’re exposed to naturally during a few days of normal living. The diagnostic benefits far outweigh the minimal risk.

Detecting Hidden Decay & Infection

Cavities that develop between teeth or beneath existing fillings often can’t be seen during a visual exam. By the time they’re visible or cause symptoms, they’ve usually grown large enough to require more extensive treatment.

X-rays reveal decay in its earliest stages, when it can be treated with a simple filling. This prevents the decay from progressing to the point where a crown or root canal becomes necessary.

Infections at the root of a tooth, called abscesses, can develop without causing pain initially. X-rays detect these infections early, allowing Dr. Mosmen to treat them before they spread or cause significant bone loss.

Evaluating Bone & Jaw Health

X-rays are essential for assessing the health of the bone that supports your teeth and the overall structure of your jaw.

Bone and jaw evaluation includes:

  • Monitoring bone loss from gum disease
  • Assessing bone density and volume for implant placement
  • Detecting cysts, tumors, or abnormalities in the jaw
  • Evaluating jaw joint function and alignment
  • Planning orthodontic treatment
  • Diagnosing fractures or structural damage

Cone beam CT imaging provides even more detailed information, creating three-dimensional images that allow Dr. Mosmen to plan complex procedures like dental implants with exceptional precision.

How Often Are X-Rays Needed?

The frequency of dental x-rays depends on your individual oral health, risk factors, and treatment needs.

For most patients with good oral health, bitewing x-rays are recommended once a year and a full set of x-rays every three to five years. Patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or other risk factors may need x-rays more frequently to monitor their condition.

New patients typically have a full set of x-rays taken to establish a baseline and identify any existing issues. Children and teens may need x-rays more often to monitor tooth development and eruption.

Dr. Mosmen only takes x-rays when they’re clinically necessary. We never take unnecessary images, and we always balance diagnostic value with patient safety.

Digital Imaging For Diagnostic Accuracy

Digital x-rays provide superior image quality compared to traditional film. The images can be enhanced, enlarged, and manipulated to reveal details that might be missed on film x-rays.

Dr. Mosmen can compare current x-rays with previous images side by side to monitor changes over time, track the progression of gum disease or decay, and evaluate the success of treatment.

Digital images are stored electronically, making them easy to share with specialists, insurance companies, or other healthcare providers when needed. There’s no risk of lost or damaged film, and images are available instantly.
