Diagnosing periodontal disease requires more than a visual exam. At The Dental Difference in Brick, NJ, Dr. Mosmen uses comprehensive diagnostic tools, including periodontal probing, digital x-rays, and cone beam CT imaging, to assess the full extent of gum disease and create an effective treatment plan.
Early, accurate diagnosis is essential for preventing progression and protecting your long-term oral health.
How Gum Disease Is Diagnosed
Gum disease diagnosis involves evaluating multiple factors, including gum tissue health, pocket depth around each tooth, bone levels visible on x-rays, presence of bleeding or inflammation, and tooth mobility or shifting.
Dr. Mosmen combines clinical examination with advanced imaging to get a complete picture of your periodontal health and determine the type and severity of disease present.
Periodontal Probing & Measurements
Periodontal probing is one of the most important diagnostic tools for gum disease. Dr. Mosmen uses a thin, calibrated probe to measure the depth of the space between your tooth and gum tissue, called the periodontal pocket.
Healthy gums have pocket depths of one to three millimeters. Gingivitis may show slightly deeper pockets with bleeding but no bone loss. Periodontitis involves pockets of four millimeters or deeper with bone loss visible on x-rays.
Probing is performed gently and provides critical information about the severity and extent of the disease. Measurements are recorded for every tooth, allowing Dr. Mosmen to track changes over time and monitor your response to treatment.
Digital Imaging For Bone Loss
X-rays reveal what’s happening beneath the gum line. Bone loss from gum disease shows up clearly on digital x-rays and cone beam CT scans, allowing Dr. Mosmen to assess how much bone has been lost around each tooth, identify patterns of bone loss, evaluate the severity of the disease, and plan appropriate treatment.
Digital imaging provides instant, high-quality images with up to 90% less radiation than traditional film x-rays. Cone beam CT imaging provides three-dimensional views that show bone levels, root anatomy, and the extent of damage with exceptional detail.
Evaluating Gum Health
Dr. Mosmen evaluates the color, texture, and firmness of your gum tissue during your exam.
Healthy gums are firm, pale pink, and fit snugly around each tooth. Diseased gums are red or purple, swollen and puffy, tender to the touch, and bleed easily when probed or brushed.
The presence of bleeding during probing is one of the most reliable indicators of active gum disease. Healthy gums do not bleed with normal brushing, flossing, or gentle probing.
Identifying Active Infection
Active infection is characterized by bleeding on probing, visible inflammation and swelling, pus or discharge from pockets, persistent bad breath or bad taste, and deepening pockets on successive measurements.
Identifying active infection allows Dr. Mosmen to determine whether the disease is stable or progressing and whether more aggressive treatment is needed.
Monitoring Disease Progression
Periodontal disease is a chronic condition that requires ongoing monitoring even after treatment. Dr. Mosmen compares current measurements and x-rays with previous records to track changes over time, assess your response to treatment, identify areas where disease is progressing, and adjust your maintenance schedule as needed.
Regular monitoring ensures that any changes are caught early and addressed before significant damage occurs.
Creating A Personalized Treatment Plan
Once Dr. Mosmen has a complete understanding of your periodontal health, he creates a personalized treatment plan based on the type and severity of disease present, your individual risk factors, your overall health and medications, and your treatment goals and preferences.
Treatment may include:
- Professional cleanings for gingivitis
- Scaling and root planing for mild to moderate periodontitis
- Antimicrobial therapy to control infection
- Surgical intervention for advanced disease
- Ongoing maintenance to prevent recurrence
Dr. Mosmen will explain your diagnosis, discuss your treatment options, and answer all of your questions so you understand exactly what’s happening and what to expect.
